Telangana Voice: Why is dental health important?
Dr. Md. Samiuddin: Healthy teeth are essential not only for chewing food but also for clear speech, a confident smile, and overall health. Poor oral hygiene can lead to gum disease, tooth loss, and even affect general health.
Question: Who should take special care of their teeth?
Answer: Everyone, regardless of age.
– Children need proper care of their milk teeth for healthy permanent teeth.
– Teenagers and adults should maintain good oral hygiene.
– Women, especially during pregnancy, should pay extra attention to gum health.
– Elderly people require regular dental check-ups as teeth and gums become weaker with age.

Question: How many times should we brush our teeth every day?
Answer: Brush at least twice a day—once before breakfast and once before going to bed. Brush gently for about two minutes using a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Question: Is brushing alone enough?
Answer: No. Along with brushing, clean your tongue, floss once daily, and use a mouthwash if recommended by your dentist.

Question: Why do gums bleed?
Answer: Bleeding gums are usually caused by plaque buildup, gum inflammation, tartar, or poor oral hygiene. Persistent bleeding should never be ignored and requires a dental examination.
Question: What causes toothache or molar pain?
Answer: Tooth decay, infection, gum disease, wisdom tooth problems, or cracked teeth are common causes. Painkillers may provide temporary relief, but the underlying problem must be treated by a dentist.
Question: If the pain goes away on its own, is treatment still necessary?
Answer: Yes. The pain may disappear temporarily while the infection continues to spread. Early treatment helps prevent serious complications.

Question: When should children’s dental care begin?
Answer: Dental care should begin as soon as the first tooth appears. Parents should gently clean the baby’s teeth with a soft cloth or infant toothbrush. Fluoride toothpaste can be introduced in small amounts after the age of two.
Question: What advice do you have for women?
Answer: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can increase the risk of gum disease. Maintaining good oral hygiene and having regular dental check-ups are very important.
Question: Does weather affect dental health?
Answer: Some people experience increased tooth sensitivity during cold or hot weather. However, maintaining proper oral hygiene throughout the year is the key to healthy teeth.
Question: Which foods are good for healthy teeth?
Answer: Milk, yogurt, cheese, leafy green vegetables, fresh fruits, and plenty of water help keep teeth and gums healthy.
Question: What should people avoid?
Answer: Limit sugary foods and drinks, tobacco, gutka, pan masala, and smoking, as they significantly increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
Question: What should someone do if they have bad breath?
Answer: Brush twice daily, clean the tongue, drink enough water, and consult a dentist because bad breath may indicate gum disease or tooth decay.

Question: How often should people visit a dentist?
Answer: Everyone should have a dental check-up every six months, even if there is no pain or visible problem.
Question: What is your message to the public?
Dr. Md. Samiuddin: Healthy teeth are a lifelong asset. Brush twice a day, eat a balanced diet, avoid tobacco products, and never ignore dental problems. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent serious complications and help maintain a healthy smile.
